Week 2 in Review
We had another productive week. Two weeks of 9th grade down, 34 to go! This week Emma did:
Of course we started off the week watching the solar eclipse. We had 93% coverage here, and it was amazing to be able to see. We struggled getting any good photos of the actual eclipse because our cameras just weren't advanced enough to, but we viewed the entire eclipse start to finish. My favorite part was how DARK it got at 1:30 in the afternoon, even though the sun was still shining. Experiencing this phenomenon was pretty much our school day for Monday, and unlike half the country, all we had to do was walk out our front door to watch.
We finished through lesson 6 in Ancient History. We finally were able to put Streams of Civilization textbook on the shelf for the next couple of months, and begin in her living books. She began reading, "Tales of Ancient Egypt", and "Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt".
Emma completed 6 lessons in Algebra this week. She has 3 days worth left in Pace 2, and I will let her take Thursday and Friday off math this coming week.
She began chapter 2 in chemistry on molecular bonding, reading and taking notes. I anticipate this chapter to take about two more weeks to complete. We also watched the second video in Chemistry 101. Wes Olsen makes chemistry so INTERESTING in this DVD series. He explains everything so well, has amazing visuals, and adds a touch of humor as well. I'm tempted to switch to this for our main Chemistry curriculum, instead of using it as a supplement.
We began chapter 2 in writing, also. Emma had a lot of trouble coming up with what to say for her first essay, which was an opinion essay on abortion. She finally turned it in Wednesday, but only got an 83% for her grade. Definitely not her best work, but like most of us, she found it more challenging to write on a forced topic, as opposed to her short stories and poems.
We didn't accomplish a whole lot of new material in French. We did manage to almost finish chapter 1, but I still need to have her do one more day to complete it 100%. When we run short on time or end up with lots of interruptions, French is what we tend to skip. Emma learns French very quickly. She has trouble with pronunciation, but she knows the words and phrases and can hold her own in limited conversation already. We leave French till the last subject of each day, as it's our fun class. We usually laugh a lot and it doesn't seem like school.
Emma continued going to gymnastics this week, and had NO back pain whatsoever. She also did everything other than front walkovers and the vault, because those seem to be the only activities that cause her back pain. I am hoping to start her back in her extra private lessons this week or next, as she only has about 8 weeks until competition season begins. Ironically she had exactly one private to begin choreography for her routine, when we discovered she had a fracture.
All in all Emma had a decent week. It could have been better school wise, but it could have been a whole lot worse too. It's still only August, and she has a good start on her year already, so I'm not concerned about anything.
